BCBA

Board Certified Behavior Analyst

Board Certified Behavior Analysts design and oversee individualized behavior-analytic treatment plans for clients across the lifespan, most commonly children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. BCBAs conduct functional behavior assessments, analyze data to guide clinical decisions, and supervise the work of RBTs and BCaBAs who implement day-to-day interventions. They work in clinics, schools, homes, and hospitals, and their scope increasingly extends into organizational behavior management and gerontology.

Salary:$65k – $120k
Education:Master's degree in applied behavior analysis, psychology, or education, plus completion of a verified course sequence (VCS) and 1,500-2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork before sitting for the BCBA examination.

BCaBA

Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst

Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts work under the supervision of a BCBA to deliver behavior-analytic services, bridging the gap between the supervising analyst and direct-care technicians. BCaBAs may conduct certain assessments, help develop intervention plans, and directly supervise RBTs in the field. The credential is particularly valuable for professionals who want clinical involvement beyond technician-level work while pursuing a master's degree.

Salary:$45k – $70k
Education:Bachelor's degree with a BACB-verified course sequence in behavior analysis, plus supervised experience hours. BCaBAs must practice under the ongoing supervision of a BCBA or BCBA-D.
Cert:BACB

RBT

Registered Behavior Technician

Registered Behavior Technicians are the frontline providers of applied behavior analysis therapy, working directly with clients to implement treatment plans designed by BCBAs. RBTs spend the majority of their time in one-on-one sessions teaching communication, social, academic, and daily living skills using evidence-based ABA techniques. The RBT credential is the fastest entry point into the ABA field and is in extremely high demand across clinics, schools, and home-based therapy programs.

Salary:$30k – $50k
Education:High school diploma or equivalent, completion of a 40-hour RBT training program, passage of the RBT competency assessment administered by a BCBA, and passing the RBT certification exam.
Cert:BACB

ABA Therapist

Applied Behavior Analysis Therapist

ABA Therapists provide direct therapeutic services using the principles of applied behavior analysis, primarily working with individuals on the autism spectrum. The title 'ABA Therapist' is commonly used in job listings and may refer to practitioners with varying levels of formal certification, though many employers prefer or require RBT certification. ABA Therapists implement structured teaching procedures, manage challenging behaviors, and track client progress through systematic data collection.

Salary:$32k – $55k
Education:Bachelor's degree preferred; some positions require only a high school diploma with completion of employer-provided ABA training. RBT certification is increasingly expected and may be obtained on the job.

BTs work in homes, clinics, schools, and community settings, following structured protocols to teach skills and reduce challenging behaviors.

Salary:$28k – $45k

They set clinical standards, develop training programs for staff, and often serve as the point of contact for insurance auditors and licensing bodies. Clinical Directors combine deep ABA expertise with business acumen, making this role ideal for experienced BCBAs seeking leadership positions.

Salary:$85k – $150k
